About the event

This study day is organized within the framework of the European research project AI REMEMBERS (see the project's official website). This large-scale initiative explores how artificial intelligence and deep learning technologies engage with history, collective remembrance, and cultural memory.

The rapid integration of AI into the field of memory studies raises a number of important questions. How are these technologies reshaping the interpretation of historical sources? What impact do they have on public engagement with history? Bringing together specialists from a range of disciplines, this study day provides a forum for critical and practice-oriented discussions of these evolving dynamics.

Target Audience

This study day aims to foster dialogue across a range of academic disciplines and professional communities. It is intended for:

  • Academics and researchers in History, Computer Science, and the Social Sciences and Humanities.
  • Professionals working in museums, memorials, and heritage sites.
  • Archivists, librarians, and specialists in digital archives and documentary heritage.
  • Museum educators, cultural mediators, and exhibition designers.
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate students, including doctoral and postdoctoral researchers.

Topics Covered

ThEME 1

Transcription and Processing of Sources

Character and Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR), automated cataloguing of large archival collections, and exploration of documentary data.

ThEME 2

Memory Mediation and Heritage

AI-driven immersive scenography, augmented reality and public history approaches, human–machine interactions in the field of memory, and enhanced virtual tours.

ThEME 3

Ethics, Biases, and Preservation

Ethical considerations surrounding algorithmic biases in memory practices, addressing the manipulation of history through deepfakes, and ensuring the long-term preservation of digital sources.
